Planning

In 1999, the State of Wisconsin adopted a comprehensive planning and "smart growth" law. This law requires municipalities, counties and regional planning commissions to create and adopt a comprehensive plan. These comprehensive plans are a guide to physical, social and economic development of a local government. Defined by the state, comprehensive plans are required to address 9 elements: issues and opportunities; housing; transportation; utilities and community facilities; agricultural, natural and cultural resources; economic development; intergovernmental cooperation; land use; and implementation. Under the same law, municipalities, counties and regional planning commissions are required to review and update their plan every 10 years.

The Village of Weston adopted its first comprehensive plan on April 3, 2006 in cooperation with Marathon County. It presents a vision of the Village of Weston, provides a strategy for realizing the vision, and sets policies for the growth and development of the village. The plan guides decisions on planning and development issues as they arise and it evolves as amendments to the plan are made. In 2013, the Village began working with MDRoffers Consulting to update the 2006 Comprehensive Plan with the goal of a complete Plan update to occur by 2016.

In late 2014, Village Planning & Development Staff began bringing forward drafts of Chapters of the Comprehensive Plan for Committee and Public review and comment. In early 2015, the Village Board approved an update to the Parks and Recreation Chapter of the Plan which was also developed and approved as the Village's Comprehensive Outdoor Recreational Plan (CORP). Over the next 12 months, more draft documents will be available for public comment and scheduled for final public hearings. Please visit the Proposed Comprehensive Plan Amendments webage for more information.

A copy of the plan and accompanying plan maps are available below or can be purchased at the Village Municipal Center. Please contact the Planning and Development Department at 715-359-6114 for more information concerning the comprehensive plan or to order a hard copy of the plan.
