Citizen Participation Opportunity: Future Weston Academy Reeboot, Part II

Posted on March 7, 2018 at 3:08 PM by Heather Reich

Almost a decade ago, the Village of Weston launched an initiative called the “Future Weston Academy.” The purpose of this academy was to pique more interest in Village government and to get more of our residents involved in our committees. We’ve decided to relaunch this Academy during March and April of 2018.

We’re excited to share more details about this upcoming program. This rebooted version of the Future Weston Academy will be designed with the same four-fold purpose that the original academy had:

  1. To provide civic leadership training to members of our younger generations
  2. To provide educational information on the major programs of the Village of Weston
  3. To harvest ideas and opinions through interactive dialogues with our younger generations on Village policy initiatives, current operations, and general quality of life
  4. To provide a younger perspective on all Village matters to our standing committees

The original Future Weston Academy was geared toward getting young residents involved in the Village. However, based on your feedback, we realize there are older folks interested in learning more about local government, as well. Therefore, to be eligible for participation in the Future Weston Academy reboot, you now must be:

  • Committed to the improvement of your community
  • Willing to attend most (though not all) 90-minute educational sessions

All 5 sessions are scheduled to take place on Thursday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Weston Municipal Center (5500 Schofield Ave.); dates include March 15 & 22 and April 5, 12, & 19. There is no cost for participation in the Academy.

Participants will receive a FREE ticket to the Village’s annual Leadership & Services Awards Banquet on Tuesday, April 17, at 6:00 p.m. At the end of the Academy, participants between 18 and 40 years of age will be enrolled in the Village of Weston New Generations Advisory Council and assigned as a new generation liaison to one of the Village’s standing committees.
